Justin BolingMore Posts4 Ways to Help During a Natural Disaster

The recent flood in Bloomsburg, PA wreaked havoc on the community and surrounding areas when the Susquehanna River overflowed its banks. The American Red Cross is now reporting that the flood destroyed more than 1,000 homes and did damage to another 2,300 in Columbia County alone.

Residents are still cleaning up the devastation…and they need your help in October.

You are invited (and needed) to serve at a flood relief event in Bloomsburg on any Saturday during the month of October. Help is badly needed before the bitter cold of winter sets in. Register for The Big Day of Serving and help with projects like picking up debris, tearing out drywall, and cleaning walls to help residents get their homes prepared for repairs, if they are determined habitable.

The Big Day of Serving is typically a youth targeted event, but we need your entire church and others you know to partner with us for one Saturday in October. Please invite everyone you know to come with you….

Youth Groups, Women’s Groups, Men’s Groups, etc
People you know from a neighboring community or church
Your family, friends, and neighbors
Choose from a flood relief event any Saturday in October:

October 8 | October 15 | October 22 | October 28

The cost is $29/person and covers the costs of materials to clean up the community, as well as lunch and dinner for your group. Please bring bottled water in with you: as of today the drinking water supply is still contaminated from this terrible flood.

Prepare your church to serve this community in a way that will be beyond their wildest imagination. Your service will not only make a physical impact on Bloomsburg, but you will offer these residents hope as you serve them.

Justin BolingMore PostsGetting Students Involved in Service

There are 2 conflicting thoughts in my mind as I write this… One – this current generation of students seems hard-wired to make a difference, to be a part of something bigger than themselves & Two – youth leaders sharing they can’t get the students in their ministry to commit to a service opportunity or event.
Huh? Those two things don’t seem to make sense…

But… maybe they do…

Is it possible that we haven’t done a good job connecting a service event with their desire to change the world? If that is true, how do we correct that mistake?

Every service experience or mission trip inherently has at its core the opportunity to change someone’s life. Whether it’s “just” helping to transform a neighborhood for a day or traveling to Peru to help a partner church ministry build new church buildings, there is the chance that any student participating in that event will be part of God working in someone’s life. I believe it’s important for each of us as leaders to communicate those opportunities, the true needs, very clearly. If our students know the needs and know that they can be a part of God working to bring change, they will want to be a part of that!

So… how do we get that info?

We need to ask. Ask your mission partner, whoever that is. Your church ministry partner. The missionaries your church supports. Your friend from seminary who is ministering at a church in need. Your mission provider or organizer. Those folks should know the answers to “what will we be doing?”

Fully informed students will want to be a part of the life-changing work God does on a mission trip. They are hard-wired that way. It’s our job to help them see how they will…

This issue is one of the reasons we created The Big Day of Serving. It’s a simple, single-day of service event where your students will help to transform a neighborhood in need. It’s only $29 per person and includes everything for the day (projects supplies, lunch, a t-shirt, etc…) We’d love to have you join and make a real difference for a community. For more information visit www.TheBigdDayofServing.com or call/email Jake Rasmussen at 1-866-974-6759 or JRasmussen@SimplyYouthMinistry.com.
