A Dream…

on March 17th, 2011

Several abandoned houses.  Parks that no one would want to go to.  Playgrounds not being used.  A neighborhood school with graffiti.  And a couple empty lots with furniture and broken bottles in them.

I don’t know about you but that description above fits about 3 or 4 neighborhoods in my town.  I drive past them and don’t think much about it.  Or… if I’m honest, I think “Man, am I glad I don’t live there.”  It’s because of situations like this that we started 1 By Youth.  1 By Youth is a dream…

It’s a dream that someday soon – 1 million people will serve in a single year helping to bring change to neighborhoods all across the country.  A single day where youth groups from around a community will come together and serve and bring transformational change to a neighborhood.  They will paint homes, reclaim parks, repair playground equipment, remove graffiti, and clean empty lots.  The neighborhood will be different after that day because people care and answered the call to serve.

God has given us this dream, this movement that hopefully will spread to communities all over America.  I’m asking you to become part of the movement.  There are 3 ways you can join us…

1.     If you live near a spring 2011 1 By Youth location, please consider bringing your youth group out for the [...]

It’s Not Too Late…

on March 9th, 2011

It’s not too late!  Trust me…

There is still time to get your group involved in a mission trip this summer.  I know… I know… you don’t believe me…  But it’s true.

There are places all over that need people to serve.  Youth mission organizations have ministry partners that need your group to come and serve.  And they’d love to help you make that happen!  I’ll use our ministry as an example…

We have a summer mission trip called Week of Hope.  It’s a pretty amazing, 5-day, community service mission where the act of serving is actually part of nearly every aspect of the trip.  We partner with local ministries and other non-profit service organizations in the community to provide volunteer staff to summer programs.  Youth and adults will serve at food banks, children’s activity programs, senior centers, and needy residents in their homes.  But more than that – youth groups serve each other the whole rest of the week.

Groups take turns preparing meals for each other (breakfast and dinner) and they help clean the lodging facility for each other.  If a group is gifted with someone who can lead worship, that person (or small group or youth band) has the opportunity to lead that part of morning and evening worship programs.  Students with the ability to participate in drama, read scripture or lead prayer also have a chance to use those gifts during the week.

Service is the fabric of the [...]

The Disconnect: bridging the youth pastor and senior pastor gap

Click the image above to LEARN MORE.

Youth pastors and senior pastors often don’t get each other. Youth pastors expect to be mentored by the senior pastor. Senior pastors expect youth pastors to respect them for the time they have spent serving the church. The truth is senior pastors often don’t have the time to mentor youth pastors and youth pastors won’t respect anyone they don’t see having major impact. These missed expectations are creating a gap leading to broken relationships and some youth pastors leaving the ministry. The problem starts early in the relationship. In the interview progress potential youth pastors get the sense the senior pastor is going to be heavily involved in the youth ministry. The reality is they are already over burdened leading the church. Senior pastors are not sure what to talk with youth pastors about so they resort to the standard question, “how many students are coming to youth group?” Youth pastors think their senior pastor only cares about numbers. Communication is broken and so is trust. Before long the youth pastor is leading his own mini-church with the students and the senior pastor wondering why the youth pastor can’t follow the vision.

In the book, The Disconnect: bridging the youth pastor and senior pastor gap I look at five issues that can make or break the important relationship. The topics are communication, core values, money, expectations [...]
