HSM Parent Letter Summer Experiment
Josh at 10:20am, July 2, 2009One of our amazing summer interns, a journalism major at Pepperdine, is helping launch a 3-month experiment in HSM. In our 5-year plan for our ministry, I have us slated to go after parents with focused efforts in 2011, so this is exciting to say the least. We’re going to do a series of summer newsletters for parents – lot of info on what’s going on, what’s ahead and arm them with ideas and discussion starters for their students.
I know it is critically important to equip parents to disciple their kids, and for too long student ministry has aimed to take on that primary responsibility. We’re using The Parent Link (they’ve got a 30-day trial going on right now) as our basis for the newsletters, and highly customizing it to our own needs.
It goes out the door tomorrow – PDF to an email list and a few printed copies at the info area, too!

Live Streaming
Chris at 9:00am, July 1, 2009I got a question the other day about how to live stream an event. This person had a great idea, they wanted to live stream some of the chapel times at camp for the parents back home so they could feel a part of what was going on. I thought it was a great application for this technology. A few years ago offering a stream of a live event on the Internet would have cost a small fortune and required a truck load of equipment. Today it’s surprisingly easy and inexpensive. Here’s a quick tutorial of how to do it.
Equipment you’ll need: A computer (preferably a laptop if you’re on the road), internet connection, video camera
Optional: Microphone (although this really shouldn’t be)
How to do it:
- You’ll need an account at one of the streaming services. They are a bunch of them, and most of them offer a free level that ad supported. I use Ustream.tv, and have been really happy with it. I use it to stream the Simply Youth Ministry Podcast and have also used it to stream sessions at the National Youth Ministry Conference. There’s newer service called, LiveStream.com that looks really good also that I’ve been tempted to try out. Stickam.com is another option for you.

SYMC & YM Summit

During the YM Summit last week, we were able to do a photoshoot with some really great (and really funny, might I add) youth workers! Doug, Rick, and Kurt also hopped in front of the camera to sit on the red couch together.
I got a hold of the pics today, and have started the creative for next year’s SYMC marketing.
Here are some snapshots of the studio during the fun.
Highlight: Someone printed out Andy B’s summit photo and mocked it up on a Group Magazine cover, and taped it on the back of the couch right before the photoshoot started.
